Assessment for Healthcare Competency (AHC)

It should be noted that no prior healthcare experience or knowledge is necessary to be successful on this exam.

Most entrance assessments focus on generic knowledge areas (reading, science, etc) however the AHC focuses more on computational thinking.

These domains will assess the skills directly correlated to early program and practice success.


Primary Domains:

Communication Skills

Whether in the classroom or at the patient’s bedside, a prospective healthcare provider’s ability to demonstrate appropriate and effective communication is critical to their success, and to positive patient outcomes.

This domain will assess the following:

● Ability to determine appropriate types of communication based on situations provided

● Responses provided to common situations encountered in interpersonal environments

● Use of appropriate language and communication in situational examples

Problem Solving & Situational Judgment

The ability to prioritize and solve problems with limited information, resources and time is a critical skill to becoming a great healthcare provider.

This domain will assess the following:

● Scenario based questions requiring the learner to demonstrate the appropriate course of action in a conflict of varying levels

● Ability to make decisions with limited information under a time constraint

● Ethical decision-making

● Self Efficacy as a measure of persistence

● Assessment of safety

Math

In your healthcare program you will learn applications of mathematics defined by your scope of practice.

This domain will assess the following:

● Ability to understand fractions

● Application of percentages to scenarios

● Basic math skills positioned in situations required of any healthcare worker

Conflict Resolution

As a healthcare provider, conflicts will arise within teams, with patients and with their families.

Even as a student, you may encounter conflict during your learning experience.

Resolving conflict in a professional and compassionate manner is a fundamental characteristic of successful healthcare providers.


This domain will assess the following:

● Ability to select appropriate de-escalation techniques

● Ability to engage appropriately in a conflict or challenging situation

● Appropriate actions to implement in scenarios where additional support is needed

Team-based Engagement

Healthcare is a team sport, and being part of a team is germane to whether a patient/client is provided with the best possible care.

This domain will assess the following:

● Understanding different roles and responsibilities in case-based examples

● Assessing when to lead, delegate or abstain from engagement

● Based on a predetermined role, determine the best course of action
